Basic Rock Climbing Safety Skills Course

The 2008 Basic Rock Climbing Safety Skills Course application process is now closed.
We will be accepting
applications for the 2009 Course in Oct. 2008. Thank you for looking into the SCMA.

The SCMA Basic Rock Climbing Safety Skills Course is offered annually, on alternate weekends - starting in late January and ending in April. The course will cover:

  • Basic Knots and Rope handling;

  • Climbing methods and techniques;

  • Leader and top rope belay techniques;

  • Climber signals and communication;

  • Catching and tying off a leader fall (simulation);

  • Safe rappelling methods (devices and non- mechanical);

  • Ascending an overhanging cliff (prusiking and mechanical);

  • Simulated Multi-pitch climbing;

  • General protection placement and anchor construction

The focus of this course is on safe climbing practices and general competence in safety techniques, including climbing techniques. It will prepare you to pass the SCMA evaluation climb and put you on the path to becoming a competent climber with the skills necessary to enjoy the sport safely and an active member of the SCMA. You will be invited to join the clubs many meetings and outings to network and share your passion with other climbers like you. If you are interested in becoming a safer top-rope climber or a proficient second in multi-pitch climbing, and developing climbing technique through SCMA member outings, then the SCMA Novice Training Course is for you.

The next course begins January 2009 and includes seven individual outing days of instruction. The cost for the Basic Rock Climbing Safety Skills Course is $350 if registered and paid before December 31, 2007, or $375 if paid after. You must be 18 or older to apply, and you will be required to sign a waiver. Climbing and mountaineering are demanding activities, both physically and mentally, and can be dangerous or even fatal if not approached with the right attitude. Please do not apply for this course if you are not physically fit or unable to attend all class sessions.

Students will need to supply the following equipment at their own expense: seat harness, rock climbing shoes, climbing helmet, several carabineers, belay/rappel device, slings/webbing, and rain gear (our training sessions are conducted rain or shine). Upon acceptance, you will be given a comprehensively detailed list of gear requirements (do not buy anything until instructed!). The SCMA will supply ropes and all other necessary gear.
