Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where is your annual climbing course taught?

A. Our annual climbing course (Jan - Apr) is taught at Mt. Rubidoux, Stoney Point, and Alabama Hills. If you think some of these areas are too far for you to participate in the course, you need not worry. The class is filled with people from throughout the L.A. basin, and the SCMA strongly encourages carpooling. Students located near each other generally share rides out to the locations. Please email us with any other questions.

Q. I just moved to (insert your Southern California city here). Can you tell me where the closest climbing gym is?

A. Check your yellow pages or www.google.com. We know of Rockreation in Los Angeles and Costa Mesa, Beach Cities Rock Gym/LA Rock Gym in West Los Angeles, Hangar 18 in Upland, and Climb X in Huntington Beach. You might check this out too: Climbing Gyms in California.

Q. I just moved to Southern California and am looking for climbing partners. Can you help?

A. You might place an advertisement on our Bulletin Board or Usenet's rec.climbing, or read about SCMA membership on our Membership page. If you're a beginning climber, have a look at our Classes page.

Q. I just moved to (insert your Southern California city here). Can you tell me where to boulder and climb?

A. Visit REI or Adventure 16 and have a look at the multitude of climbing guides available for Southern California. Alternatively, check our LINKS page for resourceful links to several Southern California climbing areas. For starters, we recommend Tahquitz and Joshua Tree. If you're a sport climber or boulderer, check out Williamson Rock, Stoney Point, or Mt. Rubidoux. Search www.google.com for general info on most of these areas, or once again check our LINKS page.

Q. I'd like a schedule of your upcoming classes.

A. The SCMA conducts only one annual training course, beginning each January and ending each April. Please see our CLASSES page for more details.
