Climbing in Greece

Kalymnos, GreeceTuesday, January 12, 2016, Ron Hudson, a longtime member of the SCMA will share pictures and stories from his three week trip to Greece with Karen Anderson which included a week of limestone climbing at Kalymnos.

After arriving in Athens and some sight-seeing, Ron and Karen traveled north by train to the town of Litochoro on the Aegean Coast.  From there they hiked to Mytikas, the highest peak (9570’) on Mount Olympus.  Next up was Meteora, a complex of medieval Orthodox monasteries built atop high sandstone pillars.  The second week of the trip was spent in the sport-climbing paradise on Kalymnos, with a couple rest days to explore Byzantine ruins on Kalymnos and Telendos, its tiny island neighbor. A ferry ride brought them back to Athens to start another week of site-seeing which included Delphi, the Peloponnese Peninsula, and Nafpolio.

Ron started his climbing career in 1967; a student at the time and member of the UCLA Mountaineering Club.  Ron was member of the root organization of the SCMA, the now disbanded Rock Climbing Section (RCS) of the Sierra Club, and his membership with the SCMA dates back to the formation of the club in 1986.  After decades of climbing on the weekends, now retired, Ron is able to climb, canyon, kayak, hike, fish, travel full time.

The meeting will be held at the auditorium of the Griffith Park Ranger Headquarters in Griffith Park, 4730 Crystal Springs Drive, Los Angeles. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM with the presentation after some brief general club business. There is no cost to attend, and members as well as non-members are always welcome to come and see what the SCMA is all about.
